Painting in the Park: Plein Air Workshop - Collingswood

This course would address basic materials and concepts of plein air landscape painting in watercolor. Landscape painters, historical and contemporary will be referenced, basic drawing and the versatility of watercolor will be demonstrated.

Supply List:

B, F or H pencil, which ever you enjoy 

Pencil Sharpener

Kneaded Eraser

5(+-) Sheets of watercolor paper. 140 lb. cold press Arches paper is ideal, but Fabbriano, Blick and Strathmore are also available. It will be more affordable to purchase large sheets and cut them down to a size with which you would feel comfortable, 12”x12” for example. Alternately, you may purchase a pad.

Brushes: If you have brushes already, bring them. If not, bring # 6 , 9 or 10 rounds, and a 1” flat. Please make sure you purchase watercolor brushes. 

A lightweight drawing board of a convenient size if you have one. Foam core boards will be provided.

A clean rag or paper towel roll.

One or two palettes with room for mixing.

Two water containers with lids.

Watercolors: If you have watercolors, bring what you have. Below is a suggested basic color selection. If you find a color or colors you want to try, please do. I prefer tubes , but pans are fine. There is a large variety of brands. Windsor Newton, Daniel Smith and M. Graham & Co. are readily available. 

Cadmium Yellow

Lemon Yellow

Cadmium Red

Quinacridone Red

Ultramarine Blue

Cerulean Blue

Yellow Ochre

Brunt Umber

Titanium or Chinese White

Hues not suggested.

 

Please consider bringing the following items:

 

  • Hat
  • Sturdy bag to carry materials.
  • Sunblock
  • Stool
  • Water & Snack
