Course Description:
Learn how to create an original mixed media painting series. In this course, we will use various drawing and painting techniques and a cut-and-paste collage mentality. Students will discover contemporary methods for layering various 2D materials and mediums to create an individual series of self-directed mixed media paintings.

1. Techniques for working with found, collected and appropriated art materials
2. How to create a coherent mixed media painting series using a variety of 2D materials
3. How to layer, integrate and combine various drawing, painting and collage techniques
Supply List
- Please feel free to bring any art materials from home that you would like to use in class. Because this is a mixed media painting class, all materials are on the table. Students will be able to apply various media and materials to their work--- depending on what materials they envision, have allocated or collected.
- In addition, students are expected to gather interesting/extraordinary materials to collage/create with. The more interested tour collection of materials, the more thrilling your artwork can become!!
- Some examples of materials you may want to collect for use in our class are: gift wrapping paper, bubble wrap, photographs (must be printed on regular printing paper with no gloss, photopaper), magazine or newsletter clippings, tickets, receipts, fabric, any found materials, paper ephemera from the street, postcards, letters, etc.
- Reusable cups for painting/rinsing (yogurt cups, jars, sauce containers) CONTAINERS WITH LIDS ARE PREFFERRED. Please start saving your recycled items for this!!
- Palette knives for mixing paint (at least 3) can be wooden or plastic
- Paint roller tray
- Palette paper or palette of your preference
- Acrylic paint in the following colors: red, yellow, blue, black (at least 16 ounces each) Secondary colors (orange/green/purple are not required but you can bring in whatever pigments you want!)
- Acrylic paint: white (you will need 2x the amount of white than other pigments)
- Assorted acrylic paint brushes: flat, round, bristle, soft, fine point (You want to make sure you have a variety of different sizes & shapes of brushes )
- House paint brushes (2)
- Scissors
- Exacto knife
- Roll of blue painter’s tape
- Modpodge glue, matte, at least 8 ounces
- Apron, smock or old t-shirt
- Pencils for drawing and sketching
- Variety of small & medium sized canvases or panels (most student compete 3-5 small paintings during a class term)
Optional materials:
- Crate/cart/container to carry and store the above supplies. Many students have rolling carts or plastic containers that they bring in for supplies that make transport easier to and from home. There are also lockers available for rent in the building if you want to store materials on site.
- Sketchbook of your preference---- can be a journal or notebook you already use to record thoughts/ideas/drawings.
- Watercolors, hard pastels, permanent markers, colored pencils, paint pens, etc.
