Master the Art of Oil Painting - Moorestown
Master the Art of Oil Painting - Moorestown

Students frustrated with the details and techniques of oil painting are especially invited to join this class and have their questions answered. From the novice to the advanced painter, every student will develop the skills they need to conquer and fully understand the nuances of oil painting. They will paint landscapes from their own images and still life setups to compose rich and vibrant paintings on canvas and panel. The instructor demonstrates for every class while leading a discussion on composition, color theory, and a host of other topics.

Materials List:

Canvas:

Pre Stretched canvas, Panels available at art stores sizes: 8 x 10, 16 x 20

(Keep them to a manageable size so you can transport them more easily)

Canvas paper which comes in pads of various sizes that can be taped to a board (You will need to supply your own board if you use this type of canvas)

Canvas Boards very cheap and easily transported

Brushes I would suggest a combination of brushes:

Bristle: Flat size 6,or8 , Filbert size 6 or 8 ,(which is slightly rounded sides), round sizes 6, 8, & 10, and a fan brush ( I would suggest one of each in mid-range size and a large flat synthetic 2 inch brush for wide areas of painting. You can buy this kind of brush at home depot or Lowes.

Synthetic brushes:

These are softer than bristle brushes, more like a water color brush but for oils

Rounds For Oil Size 2 or 3 for detail 4,6

Flat ½ inch or ¼ inch flat

And again look at what they have online at Dick Blick or ASW art supplies to get an idea what they look like. I use a variety of synthetic round brushes from 4 through 8 or 9. A liner brush is also helpful they are long and thin referred to as riggers.

Other items you will need:

● Odorless Turpentine, and medium cups, small glass jar to hold your turpentine

● Palette knife (plastic is fine), used to mix your values

● Palette ( disposable is fine which gives you about 50 sheets in each one so get the largest you can find).

Colors: ( Student grades are fine The Windsor Newton Winton colors are fine)

● White ( lots of white) I use Permalba white or zinc white, buy a big tube

● Cadmium yellow medium

● Cadmium red medium

● Yellow ochre

● Burnt umber

● Viridian green

● Prussian blue
