Hear Say: A Community Storytelling Series - Moorestown
Hear Say: A Community Storytelling Series - Moorestown

Following the introduction to storytelling (Feb 13th), participants would come to the first class in our community storytelling series (March 20th) with their "homework" - that is to read pt. 1 of the book How to Tell a Story (Everyone Has a Story), and write a first (very rough) draft of a story.  This could be something inspired from their poem created on Feb 13th, or any other story they'd like to tell.  It should be no longer than 1 typed page.

The storytelling group will meet every 3rd Monday of the month, March - June. How to Tell a Story book provided by Perkins for registered participants in this series.

Financial assistance available.

March 20th:  Karen will review the key points learned in the Part 1 of the book, go over some agreed upon guidelines for providing feedback to each other, and participants will team up in small groups to take turns reading their stories.  Then, teammates will provide a few points of feedback to each storyteller.  HOMEWORK for the next session will be to read Part 2--Developing Your Story and revise their drafts based upon what they've learned in the book and heard from feedback.  Participants will convert their stories to key points, so they can be delivered simply by referring to notes (not by reading the script).

April 17th: Karen reviews key points from Part 2, and then participants will tell the new, improved version of their story.  HOMEWORK:  Read Part 3--Telling Your Story and revise their drafts based upon what they've learned in the book and heard from feedback.  Practice their stories, so they can be delivered without notes.  They don't have to be perfect.

May 15th:  Karen reviews key points from Part 3, and then participants will tell their stories again--this time with no notes--to the large group (or two break-out groups, if there are too many of us to get everyone's stories in during a 1.5 hour session).  They'll receive feedback.  HOMEWORK:  Read Part 4 (The Power of a Story).  Put finishing touches on their stories, taking into consideration feedback, timing, etc. and be prepared to tell them to the entire group.

June 19th:  As a group, we will talk about what we learned in Part 4 and overall, then each participant will have 5-6 minutes to tell their story to the whole group.

End of June - Schedule a storytelling forum for family and friends and be Invited to perform on stage during one of Perkins Center's Gather on the Green concerts.
